Nobody really warns you about the drive home after college drop off day.
I can still tell you exactly what the car felt like. Too quiet. Too big. Her seat was empty, her things were already unpacked into a dorm room a few hours away, and I was driving back to a house that suddenly had one less person in it.
We had spent all morning setting up her room. Making the bed, hanging the string lights, laughing about which drawer would become the snack drawer. And then there’s that moment every college mom knows, where you run out of things to organize and it’s finally time to go. I hugged her. I told her I loved her. I got in the car.
And then I cried most of the way home.
If you’ve made that same drive, you know it isn’t only sadness. I was so proud of her. This was everything we had worked toward. She was ready, and she was exactly where she was supposed to be. But my heart was doing two things at once. Proud and aching, all mixed together.
Somewhere on that highway, one thought kept circling back to me. I just wanted her to know she was still loved. Not in a big, dramatic way. Just a steady little reminder that home was still thinking about her, still in her corner, still sending love even from far away.
I texted her, of course. We all do. But a text disappears in about two seconds. I wanted her to have something she could actually hold. Something that showed up at her door and said you are thought of, you are special, you are missed, without me having to hover or call every single day.
That was the idea that became Happy Heart Boxes.
Here’s what I decided to send my daughter, and what every Happy Heart Box became.
A little box that arrives once a month, filled with small things chosen around a theme. Cozy things, pretty things, a treat to make her smile, something for her desk or her self-care night. Nothing overwhelming. Just a handful of surprises that feel like someone who loves her went shopping with her in mind.
And in every single box, a keepsake heart. A small stone heart she can set on her desk or windowsill, something she can hold on a hard day and remember she is loved from home. That heart is the whole point, really. The rest is lovely, but the heart is the hug.
There’s a note in every box too, a bit of encouragement for whatever season she’s in. Midterms, homesickness, a fresh start, a long week. Just a few words to remind her she’s doing great, and she’s not doing it alone.
I’ll be honest with you. Missing my daughter at college didn’t fade after the first week, or the first month. It softened, but it stayed. And I figured if I felt that way, she probably had her own quiet moments of missing home too.
That’s really what this is about. A box on her doorstep is a way to close the distance for a minute. To say I’m thinking about you today, even from here.
I built this for my daughter first. But the more I talked about it, the more I realized how many of us are carrying the very same thing.
The mom who just made the same drive I did. The grandma who wants to spoil her granddaughter but lives across the country. The dad who isn’t sure what to send but wants her to know he’s thinking of her. The aunt, the family friend, the big sister. Anyone who loves a girl who’s away and wishes they could reach through the distance and remind her she matters.
That’s who Happy Heart Boxes is for. It’s for the people who love her, and it’s for her, all at once.
Because here’s what I’ve come to believe. The distance doesn’t have to feel so far. A box on her doorstep, once a month, is a way of saying I’m still here, I still love you, I’m still cheering you on. It’s a hug from home when a real one isn’t possible.
We’re getting ready to send out our very first boxes, and I would love for you to be part of this from the very beginning.

I started Happy Heart Boxes because of one quiet college drop off day and one big feeling. If you know that feeling too, I made this for you.
